Compressor Shaft Measurement

From the Pioneers of Shaft Metrology

Overview

Compressor shafts, engineered to withstand significant axial compressive forces, consist of critical features such as the main body, splines, bearing seats, gear interfaces, and more. These components are commonly used in high-precision industries—including aerospace, automotive, marine, subsea, and robotics—where tight tolerances and reliable performance are essential. Stress-concentrated areas like shoulders and keyways are especially critical and benefit greatly from precision measurement.

To ensure proper alignment, fit, and long-term durability, features on compression shafts should be measured using advanced metrology tools such as Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) for dimensional accuracy and surface finish evaluation. This helps reduce the risk of slippage, misalignment, or mechanical failure. Adcole gages and software, known for their sub-micron resolution, offer highly accurate readings of shaft geometry, enabling manufacturers to maintain stringent quality standards and extend the operational life of the final assembly.
